Allow me to share a true story.
Back in college I had a roommate that I adored. She was like the older sister that I never had. Always cheerful, confident, and congenial.
Being a few years older than I was, she also got married a few years before I did.
Some time later I visited her in her home, and noticed that she had a large collection of cow themed housewares that I had never noticed before.
And by collection, I mean there were cows everywhere!
Dishes, dish towels, cookie jars, spoon rests, throw pillows, and slippers. If there was something in a cow print available for purchase there was a good chance she owned it.
I politely and curiously acknowledged that she had amassed a lot of cow themed kitchen items and that I didn’t know she liked cows so much. I was her roommate after all, how could I not know this about her.
Her answer?
I actually don’t.
What happened?
Someone gave her the cow cookie jar and she said that she liked it. After that everyone assumed she liked cows, and they started buying her stuff with cow print for every gift occasion and sometimes just because.
She would smile and say thank you. Then she would display the item(s), which only provided further evidence that she really liked cows.
Let this serve as a gentle reminder that it is better to know what you want than to let someone else decide for you.
I can hear you now “I really don’t know what I want”.
Start with something small, like cows. Do you like cow-themed housewares?
